LPAC ENDORSES JENNY DURKAN FOR MAYOR OF SEATTLE

Nation’s grassroots PAC for LGBTQ women announces support for vanguard attorney in her race for Mayor of Seattle

Washington, DC (July 17, 2017) — LPAC, the country’s first and only lesbian political action committee, announced its endorsement of Jenny Durkan for Mayor of Seattle. Previously a U.S. Attorney in Seattle, Durkan made history as the first openly LGBT U.S. Attorney in the nation.  Her endorsement was unanimously approved by the LPAC Board of Directors.

“Not only would Jenny’s election be historic, as the first lesbian mayor of Seattle, her proven work fighting for justice for all makes her a truly exciting candidate,” said LPAC Executive Director, Beth Shipp. “Jenny’s work has meant so much for the LGBTQ community and for the issues we care about. We are thrilled to support her groundbreaking candidacy.”

Durkan previously served as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington under President Obama from 2009 to 2014. She was the first openly gay U.S. Attorney in the country. While U.S. Attorney, she created a civil rights department, and she worked extensively on police reform efforts in the Seattle Police Department.

“I am honored to have the endorsement of LPAC, an organization that has worked so hard to advance LGBTQ issues across the country,” said Durkan. “I have spent my career working on civil rights issues and advocating on behalf of LGBTQ rights, from prosecuting hate crimes as US Attorney to being on the front lines fighting for equality in Washington state. I know how important it is to have representation in government. Until President Barack Obama nominated me in 2009, no openly gay person had ever served as US Attorney. I was honored and proud to break that barrier. The support of the LGBTQ community means a lot to me as I seek to become the first female mayor in Seattle in almost 100 years and the first lesbian ever to hold this office.”
