LaWana Mayfield

LaWana Mayfield is a Democrat running for Charlotte City Charlotte City Council, NC (At-Large).

LaWana Slack Mayfield was born and raised in Miami, Florida, where she developed a strong work ethic and a deep commitment to community service. After losing her father at age 13, she entered the workforce, and following her mother’s passing at 15, she became fully independent. At 18, she visited Charlotte, North Carolina, and immediately felt a connection to the city that would become her home. In Charlotte, Slack Mayfield established herself as a dedicated grassroots advocate. Encouraged by her community, she ran for office in 2011 and made history as the second Black woman elected to the Charlotte City Council and the city’s first openly LGBTQ+ elected official. In 2022, she was elected as an At-Large member of the Charlotte City Council.
