Washington, D.C. –Today, LPAC, the nation’s only organization dedicated to advancing the political representation of LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary candidates, endorsed nine out LGBTQ+ women for state and local offices. This diverse group of leaders, composed of parents, athletes, educators, social workers, social justice and environmental advocates, is committed to advancing equality, justice, and progressive values across the United States.
Of particular note during Black History Month is endorsed candidate LaWana Mayfield, an incumbent running for reelection to the Charlotte City Council in North Carolina. In 2011, Mayfield made history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person and the second Black woman elected to the Charlotte City Council. In 2022, Mayfield became the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected citywide in Charlotte when she won her race for an At-Large Council seat.
“This month’s slate of endorsed candidates embody the diversity of LPAC leaders, working across sectors and nationwide to advance equality,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “This year, we are continuing to show our LGBTQ+ community that there are strong, capable leaders fighting for them, and to show those seeking to curtail our rights that they face a steep uphill battle.”
