Washington, D.C. –Today, LPAC, the nation’s only organization dedicated to advancing the political representation of LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary candidates, announced support for New York’s Proposal 1, which would codify nondiscrimination protections for New Yorkers based on race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, reproductive healthcare and more. This would guarantee – for the first time under state law – New Yorkers’ access to abortion, and our right to be who we are free from discrimination.
Currently, the New York State Constitution fails to prohibit discrimination against groups who have been historically targeted, including those with disabilities, LGBT people, immigrants, women, and pregnant people. Proposal 1 would effectively become an Equal Rights Amendment, ensuring that individuals ourselves – not government officials – are in charge of how we live our lives, and decisions we make about our own bodies.
“LPAC fully supports Proposal 1 and the right of every New Yorker to live their life free from discrimination, and to make their own decisions about their reproductive health,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “We are incredibly grateful for LPAC-endorsed leaders like Assemblymember Deborah Glick who are leading the charge forward to see Proposal 1 adopted and human rights protected.”
“New Yorkers have a great opportunity to enshrine anti-discrimination protections in our State Constitution—for women, for seniors, for the LGBTQ community and disabled New Yorkers,” said New York Assemblymember Debrorah Glick. “We can strengthen our state protection for reproductive healthcare and bodily autonomy. Flip that ballot over and vote yes on Prop 1.”
