This is our America Too, and We Will Prevail

Washington, D.C. –Today, LPAC, the nation’s only organization dedicated to advancing the political representation of LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary candidates, responded to the election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States. Trump, who initially served as President from 2016-2000, wreaked havoc on LGBTQ+ and human rights, reproductive freedom, widened economic gaps, and ramped up dangerous rhetoric against people of color, immigrants and the transgender community during his first term.

“A victory for Trump and his racist, fascist and misogynist platform is not a victory for America,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “Today, we mourn not only the loss of a true leader, but also the dream that Kamala Harris might be the first woman, the first woman of color, and the first South Asian person to serve as President of the United States. This is a profound loss for the country we believe in—a place where every one of us, regardless of who we are, is treated fairly and our fundamental rights are upheld.

As we look to the future, we know the path forward will be hard. But in Congress, we have champions like  Tammy Baldwin, Becca Balint, Sharice Davids, Julie Johnson, Sarah McBride, and Emily Randall —LPAC-endorsed victors who are ready to stand with us. In state houses, trailblazers like Gabby Salinas in Tennessee, Keturah Herron in Kentucky and Lisa Grafstein in North Carolina are defending their communities against discrimination and ensuring our voices are heard.

Hold your loved ones close today, and remember that we are not alone in this. This fight for equality, for true democracy, must continue now more than ever. Together, we will keep pushing for an America that sees, hears, and values LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary people. We will carry forward our hope, our resilience, and our commitment to build a future where everyone can live freely and proudly.”
