Sasha Ritzie-Hernandez
Sasha Ritzie-Hernandez is running in a special election for the Oakland Unified School District (USD) Board of Directors in California.
Ritzie-Hernandez was born in Mexico and grew up in a small Afro-Indigenous community. Her family immigrated to the U.S. after her brother came out and was at risk of violence in the community. While attending Oakland Public Schools, Ritzie-Hernandez became her parents' advocate and interpreter, all while grappling with learning English, adapting to a new country, and dealing with the challenges of being undocumented. Throughout her career in education as a family engagement specialist, she has worked to create a culturally responsive education system.
With a population of 440,000, Oakland is the most populous city in Alameda County and is located on the east side of the San Francisco Bay. Ritzie-Hernandez is focused on engaging school communities, accountable leadership, and responsible budgeting.
