LPAC Celebrates Historic First-Place Finish for Ysabel Jurado in Los Angeles City Council Race

Today, LPAC proudly celebrates Ysabel Jurado's remarkable first-place finish in the primary election for Los Angeles City Council, moving ahead of the incumbent, Kevin De Leon. This groundbreaking victory comes after De Leon was embroiled in controversy following his comments on a hot mic in 2021, which were widely criticized as racist. Jurado, a passionate advocate and tenants rights attorney, has now positioned herself as a formidable contender, heading into the general election against De Leon scheduled for November 5, 2024.

“Ysabel Jurado’s victory is a testament to the power of representation and the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ women in the political sphere. Her incredible grassroots campaign showcases the momentum and support for inclusive, progressive leadership in Los Angeles,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “As the first and only LGBTQ organization to endorse Ysabel ahead of the primary, LPAC is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with true changemakers like her in their communities. We are thrilled to continue our support as she heads into the general election. Her win is a win for all of us who believe in a more equitable and just society.”

Ysabel Jurado's campaign was notably supported by LPAC, the only LGBTQ organization to make an endorsement ahead of the primary in this race. Recognizing the importance of Jurado’s vision for Los Angeles, LPAC directed financial and manpower resources to bolster her campaign, including canvassing efforts. Most notably, her campaign knocked on over 80,000 doors throughout the city. This massive grassroots effort underscores the community’s desire for change and reflects their desire for increased LGBTQ representation. If victorious in November, Jurado will restore LGBTQ representation to the Los Angeles City Council.

“I am immensely grateful for LPAC's support in the primary election. I've experienced firsthand the obstacles that queer women of color face when stepping into the political arena, and organizations like LPAC are what helped a campaign like ours defy the odds and earn first place in a race of eight candidates,” said Ysabel Jurado. “Representation matters. It's not just about who's in the room; it's about who's at the decision-making table. I'm ready to bring queer representation back to the City Council and I'm excited to have LPAC by my side.”

As the Los Angeles community and its allies rally behind Ysabel Jurado, her campaign continues to be a beacon of hope and progress. With LPAC’s support, Jurado is poised to make history and bring a fresh, inclusive perspective to the Los Angeles City Council.
