LPAC Statement on the Overturning of Roe v Wade
Team LPAC is devastated by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey. Individual states can now ban abortion, and as a result of so-called "trigger laws" abortion is now banned in 13 states. Another 13 are likely to soon follow. Despite 50 years of precedent, and the fact that 75% of Americans think decisions about abortion should be left to women and their doctors, this court has taken a radical action and millions will suffer the consequences.
Reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and social justice are inextricably linked, and the table is set for more SCOTUS opinions that will allow states to eventually reverse marriage equality, outlaw contraception, criminalize same-sex relations, and even ban interracial marriage. This is why, since LPAC's founding, every candidate we have supported must show a commitment to pro-choice values.
In state legislatures throughout the country, LGBTQ women are leading the fight to protect abortion access, sometimes against long odds and steep Republican majorities. Given that these decisions will be left to the states, our work to elect LGBTQ women to state legislatures is more important than ever. This is a difficult and scary moment, but LPAC will continue its efforts to support LGBTQ women legislators and candidates who will be tireless in their efforts to protect reproductive health.
"We need to acknowledge that today is a terrible day," said LPAC Executive Director Lisa Turner. "Tomorrow let's regroup, and get to work on what we can do. As LGBTQ women, we can organize, campaign, and above all make sure to vote in November for candidates who will defend our rights."
