LPAC Responds to Trump's Anti-LGBTQ+ Executive Orders

January 20, 2025 — Today, LPAC, the only organization in the U.S. working to elect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer women and nonbinary people, responded to news of Donald Trump’s initial anti-LGBTQ+ executive orders on Day One as the 47th President of the United States. While executive orders do not require congressional approval, there are ways that Congress can remove funding or create other obstacles to block their enactment.

“Trump campaigned on a promise to govern from a position of bigotry, not leadership, and we are not surprised to see him doing exactly that from Day One,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “We are thankful that we have members of Congress like LPAC-endorsed Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Rep. Sarah McBride, Rep. Julie Johnson, Rep. Emily Randall, Rep. Becca Balint, Rep. Sharice Davids and Rep. Angie Craig ready to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ people, immigrants and people of color. We will not sit idly by as the Trump Administration targets our transgender friends and loved ones who seek to serve our country, play the sport they love, or simply live as who they are; immigrants working hard to provide for their families; and those providing and accessing lifesaving reproductive care. From Day 1 to Day 1,461, we will never stop fighting for LGBTQ+ and nonbinary people to thrive.”

Among Trump’s expected anti-LGBTQ+ executive orders is a reinstated ban on transgender people serving in the military, reversing Biden’s 2021 policy that allowed transgender Americans to serve openly.

“The overlooked tragedy of Trump’s effort to ban trans people from the military is that, if successful, it will weaken our national security,” said Charlotte Clymer, LPAC Board member, author and veteran. “It will erase billions in personnel development and expertise, it will significantly harm our military’s recruitment and retention efforts, and it will ultimately make our country less prepared against credible threats. It will make our nation far less safe. It is a needless and cruel action that does the exact opposite of his stated intention.”
