LPAC Responds to Newsom Anti-Trans Remarks
March 6, 2025 — LPAC, the only organization in the U.S. working to elect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer women and nonbinary people, responded today to news that Democratic California governor Gavin Newsom made anti-trans remarks in his debut podcast with conservative guest Charlie Kirk, stating that trans athletes competing in sports is “deeply unfair.”
“Gavin Newsom made several deliberate choices,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “He chose to host a known anti-trans extremist, Charlie Kirk on his podcast. He chose to perpetuate false and dangerous myths about trans kids. And he chose to throw the trans community under the bus in an effort to win party crossover votes. None are acceptable; all three choices together are unforgivable. Californians, and especially LGBTQ people and allies, deserve leaders who will defend their rights, not toss them aside for political points.
LPAC will remember this blistering attack against our own, and will remind LGBTQ+ folks of it when Newsom is fighting for the top of the Democratic ticket in a few years.”
