LPAC Responds to Trump's Address to Congress
March 5, 2025 — LPAC, the only organization in the U.S. working to elect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer women and nonbinary people, responded today to President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress last night, during which he spoke on his view of the current state of the country and his administration’s accomplishments.
In addition to perpetuating harmful misconceptions about immigrants, the economy, and climate change, Trump also took particular aim at transgender people, stating that “there are only two genders, male and female,” and expressing his opposition to gender-affirming care and trans women playing women’s sports. He falsely claimed that schools are teaching kids to transition without their parents’ knowledge or consent, when in fact, CNN reports show that this particular case was more complex and the parents did know their child was nonbinary.
Many scientists have affirmed that sex is not inherently binary, and that being transgender is an unchangeable identity, not something a school or anyone else can teach a child to be. In truth, denying transgender kids the autonomy to be their full selves causes proven and severe harm. Anti-transgender laws like those touted by Trump have caused a 72% rise in suicidality among trans and nonbinary youth.
“When Trump spouts out lies to the American people like he did last night, the damage is swift and irrevocable,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “Transgender kids should not have to pay the price for greedy billionaires in search of distractions from their coordinated plans to accumulate stolen wealth, but that is exactly what is happening. I’m proud that LPAC has endorsed leaders like U.S. Representatives Becca Balint and Emily Randall, who refuse to be silent in the face of these cruel attacks on transgender children. All of our kids deserve love and compassion, and the LGBTQ+ community will not be silent as Trump attempts to erase our own.”
